Book: Fast Food Nation
Research Question: What made fast food restaurants a triumph?
There reason why fast food restaurants were so successful because they were fast, reliable and very kid friendly. Unlike nowadays back in the 1940s when fast food chains started become popular, this was a new way of life and very competitive playing field. Many fast food restaurants came and went and some became franchisee and still are very popular today. Much of my research sources point to the assembly line operation making fast food restaurants such a success. This gave all the employees a certain task to be performed to keep production moving fast. This was first widely acknowledged by Theodore Levitt (1972) in his article ‘Production line approach to service’. In it, he states that if service industries think of service in terms of manufacturing, they will get the same kind of detailed attention that manufacturing gets. It will be carefully planned, controlled, automated where possible, audited for quality and regularly reviewed for performance improvement and customer satisfaction. Now this makes perfect sense, but the food had to have some dealings with making fast food restaurant a triumph also. Could it be that burgers were easy to eat while driving or French fries made all the children happy? Whatever it was this left an everlasting impression in American history and even bigger possibilities for the future.
